Bible Courses In High School

Religion and public school in the news yet again today.

Seems a new approach, or a revised old approach, is being considered. Teaching a class on the literary and historic influence of the bible in high school. I like it.

Wake up... Didn't mean to make you pass out in shock.

The bible has had a major influence on our society, and the world. Its not the only one, but it is definately a major one. An elective course like that could be beneficial to anyone.

Key word being elective. A class such as should never be a required course as it does touch on religion. Reading another religions spiritual text could very well be considered blasphemy in another church.

Actually, I'd love to see a year long course covering the basics of even more than that. Cover Greek, Roman, Norse, and Egyption Mythology, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddism, etc. Maybe a little knowledge, and a bit less hearsay on some religious beliefs would open a few peoples minds, and end some of the paranoia and hate running around this country.

I like what you're saying. If everyone knew at least a little bit about quite a few of the other religions then the world would be a much better place.

I completely agree. Forget some of those fucking math courses... forget some of those fucking science and lit courses. Yes, they are important for good well-rounded knowledge. But do you know what is so much more important, especially in the slowly collapsing world we live in? INFORMATION ABOUT THE WORLD WE LIVE IN. So, you know, kids maybe, I don't know, understand it? Learn to live in it?

Religion classes are important. Most people are religious, in one way or another. Not only that, but religions, the fundemental parts of all of the major religions, are basically a good foundation to leading a the type of life (I think) everybody should lead. Like, loving thy neighbor? That whole golden rule thing? Ethics, and religions (note the s. as in at least the major 5 as well as a basic overview of indigenous relgions), and the basic tools for understand the society we live in should be taught from not just high school, but starting in Pre-K.

Do you know how many Christians don't know that Jesus is a major player in Islam... like God, most impt, Muhammad like second impt... then Jesus! It is amazing to me. "We hate them because they don't believe in Jesus or God!" Except for the fact that they do in fact believe in the exact same God, and that they believe in Jesus, just not that he was the Messiah...

Anyway, I digress (severely). My point is that everybody should know that. Everybody should understand what is in the Bible and the Qur'an. They should also be taught not from a religious point-of-view, because, honestly, that more often than not fucks everything up, but a secular one. An impartial, this is the history of the time, these are the different perspectives. This is what a metaphor is, and how it is often used as a literary device. Oh, and this is what a parable is, this is how it is used, its effectiveness.

Anyway. Hole, yelling down it, that is me.

- Rachel, who gets worked up easily when it comes to children. And when it comes to religion. And most drug use, abuse, stupidness, and generally any moral issue (especially one that is being legislated).
