Who's the Greatest?
On a recent post at ST's place, some commentary was made about great drummers, and it sparked a bit of debate. So... I'm curious to see who's faves are whose beyond that of drummers.
This isn't just going to be a skill test. Its also influence. It also shows an individuals tastes. I'm going to rate, in the drummer catagory, Danny Carey from Tool over Neal Peart from Rush simply because I do not like Rush. Just because its easy to look at so many legends when it comes to something like this, there HAS to be a number one: no ties. BUT - you can also list up to four "honorable mentions." No ranking needed on those.
I am going to have rankings for vocals, guitar, bass, drums, keyboards (piano, synth, etc.), and songwriter. That covers the basics of most rock bands. Note: rock bands. If someone wants to bring up someone like Johnny Cash... that's cool. I just don't want to read any Mozarts for songwriter, or, as much as he kicks ass... Luciano Pavarotti for vocals.
Drums - #1 Danny Carey from Tool.
Honorable Mention - Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Probot), Jimmy Chamberlain (Smashing Pumpkins), John Bonham (Led Zepelin), and Vinnie Paul (Pantera).
Keys - #1 Bernie Worrell (Parliament, Funkadelic, Praxis, Colonol Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains...)
Honorable Mention - Elton John, Billy Joel, Ray Charles, Ben Folds.
Bass - #1 Les Claypool (Primus, Oysterhead, Sausage, Colonol Claypool's...)
Honorable Mention - Bootsy Collins (Parliament, Funkadelic, Praxis), Flea (Red Hot Chilli Peppers), Tim Commerford (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave).
Guitar - #1 Jimi Hendrix
Honorable Mention - Buddy Guy, Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave), Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains), Dimebag Darrell (Pantera, Damageplan).
Vocalist - #1 Maynard James Keehan (Tool, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer)
Honorable Mention - Freddie Mercury (Queen), Layne Staley (Alice In Chains, Mad Season), Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog), Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil).
Songwriter - #1 Bob Dylan
Honorable Mention - Willie Nelson, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), Marilyn Manson, whoever from the Beatles actually did the most of the songwriting (since John is still arguing from the grave with Paul about it).
Ready... Set... ARGUE!!!

I have a story about the drummer from def leppard...
When I was working at Target, I had this store manager named Les. Really cool guy, little bit older than me, listened mostly to hip hop, R&B, etc.
He went to see Def Leppard in concert back in the day.
Why?
Because he played drums, and he wanted to see the drummer with only one arm.
bob dylan may have the worst voice in rock history... well... him and David Yow from the Jesus Lizard are pretty close... but Dylan could write like no other.
All Along the Watchtower...
Rainy Day Women...
Lay Lady Lay...
knockin' on heavens door...
He was gifted with an ear and a pen and a pad... just no voice at all.
sorry, I can't stand him. Just the mention of his name pisses me off. I think it has to do with a lot of people saying, without qualifying it like you, how great dylan is and how they'd listen to him all the time.
that in addition to his inherent lack of performing talent, makes for a very unpalatable experience.
barf city.
people who can listen to bob all the time are tone deaf.
I completely understand your point. I can't listen to two Dylan songs in a row if he's the one doing them. Get someone else up there though... song usually kicks ass.
which is precisely why I only mention him as a great songwriter.
I fell asleep at a Bob Dylan concert. He was fucking dreadful.
My fantasy band? hm.
drums - grohl
no keyboards
bass - flea
guitar - johnny marr
vocals - scott walker
songs - morrissey / marr / bowie / walker / bacharach
there's a fucking weird band, right there!
ST
